The World Championship cycle
This is the ladder that decides who gets to play for the crown — a two-year qualification gauntlet that funnels dozens of contenders down to a single challenger. If you only learn one storyline in competitive chess, make it this one.
World Championship · Candidates Tournament · FIDE World Cup · Grand Swiss
- World Championship — the summit. A long head-to-head match between the reigning champion and a challenger, run by FIDE and played roughly every two years. Win it and you’re the best in the world, officially.
- Candidates Tournament — the direct qualifier. Eight of the world’s best fight it out, and the winner earns the right to challenge the champion. It’s often the most dramatic tournament of the whole cycle.
- FIDE World Cup — a huge 128-player single-elimination knockout. Survive round after round of do-or-die mini-matches and you can punch your ticket to the Candidates.
- Grand Swiss — a massive open event on the Swiss system where the elite and the up-and-comers all play in one giant field, with the top finishers qualifying for the Candidates.
Elite super-tournaments
These are the marquee invitational events — small, ferociously strong fields of the world’s top grandmasters, played year after year. No title on the line, just enormous prestige, prize funds, and pride. They’re the “regular season” of top chess.

- Tata Steel Chess — held every January in the tiny Dutch seaside village of Wijk aan Zee, it’s the traditional season-opener and one of the oldest and most beloved events in the game.
- Norway Chess — a late-spring super-tournament famous for its brutally strong field and its “no boring draws” scoring quirks that push players to fight.
- Sinquefield Cup — the flagship classical event of the Saint Louis chess scene in the United States, and one of the strongest tournaments of any year.
- Grand Chess Tour — not one event but a season-long series of elite tournaments (classical, rapid, and blitz) with a combined standings race and a grand final.
Rapid, blitz & team events
Not all chess is slow and cerebral. This bunch is faster, louder, and more of a party — quick time controls, team formats, and the kind of blunders and comebacks that make for brilliant spectating.

- Global Chess League — a modern franchise-style team league with mixed rosters of men’s, women’s, and junior stars playing rapid chess for city-branded teams.
