We collect as little as we reasonably can, we ask before loading analytics, and we don't sell your data to anyone. This page explains what that means in practice — the categories of data, why we hold each one, and how to have it removed.
- Analytics (Google Analytics 4) load only after you consent, and usage is anonymised.
- We keep your newsletter email only if you give it to us, only to send what you signed up for.
- Your board and piece preferences and puzzle progress live in your own browser, not on our servers.
- We never sell your data.
- Want your data accessed or deleted? Email support@chesslab.academy.
What we collect
Three things, and that's roughly it:
- Anonymised usage analytics. If you consent, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how the site is used in aggregate — which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from, what works and what doesn't. IP addresses are anonymised and we use it to improve the site, not to identify you.
- Your newsletter email — only if you give it. If you sign up for the daily puzzle by email, we store the email address you provide so we can send it. That's the only reason we hold it. You never have to give it to use the site.
- Local browser storage. Your board theme and piece-set preferences and your puzzle progress are saved in your browser's local storage on your device. This stays on your machine so the site remembers your setup between visits — it isn't sent to us or used to track you.
How we use it
Analytics data is used only to improve the site — to see which lessons help and which pages need work. Your newsletter email is used only to send the newsletter you asked for, and every email includes an unsubscribe link. Local storage is used only to remember your preferences and progress on your own device. We don't build advertising profiles and we don't use your data to identify you personally.
Cookies and consent
We don't load analytics or its cookies until you say yes. Google Analytics 4 runs only after you give consent via our consent banner; decline, and GA4 is never loaded. The local storage that holds your board preferences and puzzle progress is functional — it's what makes those features work — and it stays in your browser. You can clear it any time from your browser settings.
We never sell your data
Plainly: we do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data — not your email, not your usage, not anything. We share data only with the service providers listed below, and only so the site can function.
Third parties we rely on
Running the site involves a few trusted providers. Each processes only what it needs to do its job:
- Google Analytics 4 — consent-gated, anonymised usage analytics.
- Cloudflare — hosting and delivery of the site (including standard server logs used for security and reliability).
- Our own CRM system — the newsletter email you give us is stored and managed in Chess Lab Academy's own customer-relationship system, used solely to send you the newsletter you signed up for. We don't hand your email to a third-party marketing platform.
Your rights
You can ask us what personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it — including unsubscribing and having your newsletter email removed. Just email support@chesslab.academy and we'll take care of it. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA; we honour those requests through the same address.
Children
Chess Lab Academy is a general-audience chess resource and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, email support@chesslab.academy and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be made clear rather than slipped in quietly.
Who we are and which law applies
