Chess Lab Academy is an interactive chess academy: a place to actually learn chess, not just read about it. Every lesson sits next to a live board you can play through, every claim is engine-verified, and the whole thing is free to use. We built it because good chess teaching is scattered, paywalled, or dull — and it doesn't have to be any of those.
What Chess Lab Academy is
It's a full chess-learning library you learn by doing. Read a lesson, then play the exact position it just taught you — the board is right there on the page. Concretely, that's:
- 1,250 verified lessons across openings, tactics, strategy, endgames, players, and events — every chess claim engine-verified before publishing.
- Live, interactive boards on the pages themselves, so you play the ideas instead of only reading them.
- 83,000 rated puzzles to sharpen your tactics, drawn from the Lichess open database (CC0).
- 40 piece sets and 11 board themes — from clean studio styles to sets inspired by chess traditions around the world — switchable anytime, with your choice remembered on your device.
Why it exists — the mission
Our mission is simple: make genuinely excellent chess learning that's verified, interactive, free, and open. "Genuinely excellent" is the load-bearing part. There's a lot of chess content in the world and most of it is either thin, wrong, or locked behind a paywall. We wanted a resource where the moves are actually correct, the explanations actually make you better, and the board is right there so you can feel the idea click.
"Free and open" is the other half. The core learning — the lessons, the boards, the puzzles — is free to use. We'd rather earn your trust by being genuinely useful than gate the basics.
How it's built — and why we're upfront about it
Here's the part most sites won't tell you: our lessons are drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by a human editor, and every concrete chess claim — best move, evaluation, mate-in-N — is verified with Stockfish 17 before it's published. Rules follow the FIDE Laws of Chess, and every position is checked for legality with python-chess.
We say this plainly because radical transparency is the whole strategy. AI lets us cover far more of chess, far better, than a small team could alone; verification and human review are what make it trustworthy; and telling you about both is what lets you judge for yourself. We publish under the honest byline "Chess Lab Academy Editorial Team," and we don't invent credentials or fake experts to look more impressive than we are.
