What is the Global Chess League?
The Global Chess League (GCL) is a franchise-based team competition, co-organised by FIDE (the international chess federation) and Indian tech firm Tech Mahindra, which also gives the league its sponsor name — the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. It launched in 2023 as an over-the-board rapid event, and it does one thing that almost nothing else in chess does: it puts elite men, elite women, and rising junior stars on the same team, playing for the same trophy.
Six city-style franchises draft their rosters, hire a captain, and slug it out over roughly two weeks. Think of it less like a quiet classical tournament and more like a sports league — with team benches, roster drama, and a title decider at the end.
How the Global Chess League works
Each of the six teams fields six players across six boards, and the roster has to be balanced. Every squad is built from four categories:
- 1 Icon — a marquee superstar, usually the highest-rated name on the team
- 2 Superstar Men
- 2 Superstar Women
- 1 Prodigy — a junior player (born 2003 or later)
That mixed-gender structure is the league’s signature. A win on the women’s board or the prodigy’s board is worth exactly as much as a win on the icon’s board — so no team can just lean on one big star.
The scoring is where it gets spicy. The GCL deliberately rewards aggressive, decisive chess:
- Win with the Black pieces: 4 game points
- Win with the White pieces: 3 game points
- Draw: 1 game point · Loss: 0
Because a Black win is worth more than a White win, players are pushed to actually play for a result instead of shaking hands early. Add up the six boards, and the team with more game points takes the match — worth 3 match points (1 each if the boards finish level).
The games are rapid (a 15-minutes-plus-10-seconds time control), which keeps the action moving. Over the group stage the six teams play a double round-robin — everyone faces everyone twice, ten matches each — and the top two teams meet in a final to decide the champion.
A short history
The GCL is young but it already has a storyline. The 2023 inaugural season was played in Dubai, and it belonged to the Triveni Continental Kings, captained by Levon Aronian. The 2024 season moved to London, where Triveni — now led by Alireza Firouzja — went back-to-back. In 2025 the league came to Mumbai, and the story finally changed: the Alpine SG Pipers, powered by Fabiano Caruana, ended Triveni’s reign. Three seasons, three host cities, and a genuine dynasty-versus-challenger arc.
The latest edition: 2025 (Season 3)
The 2025 Global Chess League ran 14–23 December 2025 in Mumbai, the league’s third season. Six teams fought through the double round-robin, and the final pitted the two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings (with Firouzja back on Icon board) against the Alpine SG Pipers and their leader Fabiano Caruana.
Alpine took the final 2–0, winning both rapid matches to lift their first title and snap Triveni’s grip on the trophy. Anish Giri was named MVP of the final. Firouzja walked away with Male Player of the Season, and Hou Yifan — one of the strongest women ever to play the game — took Female Player of the Season.

The fourth season is scheduled for 3–13 September 2026 in Bengaluru, India. The big headline: Magnus Carlsen is back in the league after sitting out 2025, and Indian star Divya Deshmukh is set to make her GCL debut. The player draft was held in Mumbai in late June 2026, with a pool of dozens of grandmasters spread across the six franchises (as of July 2026 the season has not yet been played).
