What is a chess puzzle?

A chess puzzle is like a mini game with a hidden good move inside. Your job is to be a detective and find it! Every puzzle shows you a real chess position, and there’s always one move that’s the best. When you find it, you win the puzzle.

The cool part? The more puzzles you do, the more your eyes learn to spot great moves. Then when you play a real game, you’ll see them super fast — like magic. But it’s not magic. It’s just practice!

What to look for in each puzzle

Here are the three things to hunt for. Try to find them one at a time:

  • A free piece. Can you take one of your opponent’s pieces without losing anything? Free pieces are the best!
  • A fork. That’s when ONE of your pieces attacks TWO of theirs at the same time. The knight loves doing this — it jumps in and attacks two things at once. Cool, right? You can learn more about the fork here.
  • Checkmate. Can you trap the enemy king so it can’t escape? That wins the whole game!

Look for these three, and you’ll solve a LOT of puzzles.

Tips to have fun and get better

  • Do just a few puzzles a day. A little bit every day is better than a whole bunch at once.
  • Take your time. There’s no rush! Look at the whole board first.
  • Got one wrong? No problem! Look again and find the good move. Now you know it for next time.
  • Say the move out loud — “fork!” or “checkmate!” It helps your brain remember.

Keep playing

You’re doing awesome. Every puzzle makes you a little stronger.

Questions kids ask

Are these puzzles too hard for me? Nope! These are picked to be easy and fun for kids. Most of them are just one move. If you know how the pieces move, you can start right now.

What if I get lots of them wrong? That’s totally fine! Everyone gets puzzles wrong — even champions. Getting one wrong just teaches you a new pattern. Keep going!

How many should I do? Just a few each day. Maybe five! Doing a little bit every day makes you better than doing a ton once in a while.

Where do the puzzles come from? They come from the Lichess open puzzle database, which is free for everyone to use. They’re real chess positions, picked to be just right for kids.
